Appearances can deceive, or at least mislead —
My smile is real, my joy is true, but in my eyes you may read
An emptiness I can’t quite name, though sometimes I forget.
I push it away, thinking it selfish, as the world owes me no debt.
Yet, every so often, something stirs, reminding me of you —
For just a moment, even a second, then like a bird, the thought flew.
Though we’ve never met, or maybe we knew each other too well,
We were more than the best of friends; in complete love, we fell.
But perhaps it wasn’t in this life, or this time, or this place,
And I can’t stop wondering, even though I can’t picture your face.
But when I close my eyes, the image is faint, yet I can still see your heart,
And so, though I never stop searching, each day, I again must start.
I thought I’d found you in every failed relationship I’d had,
But when they weren’t you, all that remained was anger and sad.
Then someone said, “What if you’ve discovered the truest of love,
But you’re separated now — that’s why you search, high and low, under and above?”
Was that you, when, as strangers, our eyes met in the busy airport,
And I felt a sense of knowing, though the contact was short?
Or was it the fragrance that caught my attention that day in the crowd —
You trying to speak to me, yet unable to scream out loud?
Or am I just a fool, like all fools, hoping to believe in something not there?
Maybe these thoughts are just a silent cry of longing, of despair.
But I can’t give up, for I still believe my soul is not just one, but two.
So I will walk through this world, always looking, always searching for you.
