School has served the Prescott area for 10 years
Parents of children with special needs are thrilled and relieved to learn there is a nationally recognized facility right here in Prescott that specializes in K-12 special education for kids with autism, challenging behaviors, developmental disabilities and language disorders. ASCEND (Autism Spectrum Center for Educational and Neurological Development) is a nonprofit school for children with autism or a related disability, who may have difficulty in a typical school setting. It serves students at all levels of the spectrum. ASCEND provides a small-school setting, and its caring staff strives to make each child’s school experience fun and engaging to create a happy and positive school experience.
Angela Levin, Founder/Director of ASCEND said, “The mission at ASCEND is to view the child first and the disorder second. We strive to meet the individual needs of each child. We believe that each child must be nurtured at all levels, physically, emotionally, spiritually and educationally.”
Each school day at ASCEND runs on a consistent routine, beginning with activities such as visual schedules, the Pledge of Allegiance and discussing weather and current events. Academics, functional living skills, independent living skills and vocational concepts are integrated into group lessons. The program at ASCEND works well with children who have sensory integration issues and even implements individualized sensory diets as needed. Students can also receive music instruction, occupational therapy and individual speech therapy. Those 16 years and older may take transitional and vocational training.
As an Arizona nonprofit organization, ASCEND is always looking for volunteers. Parents of students are an integral part of the programming choices, fundraising and community events. If you have a child with special needs, or know someone who does, ASCEND can make a big difference in their lives. For more information, visit azautismascend.org or call 928-443-9290.
