The period began with two days of AIA 2A and 1A playoff basketball to decide which schools would advance to the state semifinals. Nearly 5,000 fans attended the sessions.
On Sunday, Feb. 18, the WWE and its fans descended on Prescott Valley for an evening of high-energy entertainment, highlighted by the marquee match between Roman Reigns and John Cena. It was John Cena’s first visit to Prescott Valley with the WWE, and nearly 4,000 fans witnessed the extravaganza.
Monday and Tuesday showcased the top 3A girls and boys basketball teams in the state in the quarterfinal rounds, preceded by the semifinals and championship games of the AIA Special Olympics Play United playoffs. The teams put on a fantastic exhibition of competition and sportsmanship for the nearly 4,000 fans in attendance.
Wednesday featured the Newsboys United tour, attended by over 2,500 fans. Opening act Zealand warmed up the crowd, and the Newsboys’ performance was electric, highlighted by drummer Duncan Phillips keeping the beat while he and his drum set elevated to over 20 feet in the air, tilted 90 degrees forward, and then began spinning in midair.
The AIA 2A and 1A basketball semifinal and final rounds took place on Friday and Saturday. Four new Arizona state high school basketball champions were crowned as nearly 10,000 fans took in the weekend’s action. This year, AIA basketball and wrestling accounted for eight event days and 42 basketball games.
The busy stretch concluded with the Northern Arizona Suns returning to town, posting a 12-point victory over the Austin Spurs.
“It was an incredibly exciting stretch of events for Prescott Valley Event Center,” said Scott Norton, the facility’s general manager. “The fans were amazing and incredibly supportive of all of the competitors and performers. I especially want to thank all of our staff who worked tirelessly and enthusiastically to bring these events to the community.”
